Abhijnana Shakuntalam by Mahakavi Kalidas, edited and adapted by Professor Guna Saikia and directed by Rajen Phukan, was staged for the first time in Assam in Sanskrit language at the Nagaon District Library Auditorium recently

Some unique elements of the original play:

Use of the Prakrit Language: Kalidasa introduces the use of Prakrit, the vernacular language of the common people, alongside Sanskrit. While Sanskrit was the language of the elite, the inclusion of Prakrit for lower-status characters gave a more authentic and natural feel to dialogues, distinguishing the linguistic texture of the play

Innovative Plot Structure: The play introduces the concept of a “recognition scene” (abhijnana), where a lost object—Shakuntala’s ring—serves as a key to restoring memory. This plot device of the hero’s memory loss and eventual recognition of his beloved adds depth to the narrative, combining dramatic tension with psychological realism.
