Nagami Mithun of Nagaland and the Manipuri duck from Manipur have been officially registered by the ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, marking a major milestone for indigenous animal biodiversity in the Northeast. Their inclusion places the breeds on India’s national livestock genetic map, enabling structured conservation, scientific breeding, and livelihood enhancement for local farming communities.

Nagami Mithun holds global significance as the world’s first officially recognised Mithun breed, following extensive genetic and phenotypic studies by the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun at Medziphema. The recognition strengthens the region’s role in conserving unique livestock germplasm and promoting sustainable rural economies.
