The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognisance of the growing ground-level ozone pollution in major Indian cities. It directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to conduct an expert study and devise control measures.

Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant formed by chemical reactions involving nitrogen oxides (NOx) from vehicles, industries, and power plants. While stratospheric ozone protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation, tropospheric ozone acts as a harmful pollutant, posing risks to human health, vegetation, and ecosystems.
